S3 Course:

World War One: The causes of the First World War, life in the trenches, technology of war, the home front and the peace treaty following the war.
Civil Rights USA: The Civil Rights Movement and the battle for racial equality in the USA.


Nationals 3/4/5:

Scottish Study: The Era of the Great War, 1910-1928: The impact of World War One politically, socially and economically on Scotland.
British: The Atlantic Slave Trade 1770-1807: The impact of slavery on Britain and the Caribbean with a focus on the Triangular Trade and abolitionist movements.
European and World: Germany 1918-1939: The establishment of the Weimar Republic and its problems, followed by Hitler’s rise to power and life in Nazi Germany.


Assessment:

Exam (1 hour 30 minutes): The exam assesses knowledge, understanding and analytical skills of source based questions on the Scottish, British and European contexts. The question paper will have 60 marks.

Assignment: (National 5) This assignment will have 20 marks. Candidates will have 1 hour to write an extended piece of writing on one of the studied topics. This is submitted to the SQA for external marking.
Added Value Assignment: (National 4 and National 5)
The pupils will research one topic of their choice from the Scottish, British and European contexts. The pupils will produce a written assignment on their chosen topic.


S5/6 Higher:

Scottish Study: Migration and Empire, 1830 – 1939: Investigating the movements of population into and away from Scotland during the period 1830s to 1930s and the impact this had on identity, experiences and communities in new countries.
British Study: Britain 1851 to 1951: The study of Britain’s democratic development as well as a focus on the causes and impact of the Liberal Reforms and the Welfare State.
European and World Study: Russia 1881 – 1921: The collapse of the Tsarist regime, the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Bolsheviks between 1881 and 1921.

Assessment:

Extended Essay (2 hours) Candidates will have 2 hours to write an extended essay on one of the studied topics. This is submitted to the SQA for external marking. The essay will count for 30 out of 100 marks of the total external assessment.
Paper I (1 hour 20 minutes) Two essays based on issues studied. It will count for 40 out of 100 marks of the total external assessment. Paper II (1 hour 25 minutes) Source based paper evaluation of historical evidence. This paper, which will count for 30 out of 100 marks of the total external assessment.


Advanced Higher:

USA (1850-1865) “The House Divided”: The tensions within American society. An investigation of the causes and nature of the American Civil War and the political and social economic outcomes of the conflict.


Assessment:

External Examination: One paper of 3 hours. Part 1 is essay based questions; Part 2 is source-based questions.


Dissertation:

Candidates will write a dissertation on a topic chosen from the unit. The dissertation will be marked externally by the SQA and is out of 50.
